Owner questions

How do I start offering benefits?

Five steps, from counting your people to choosing a start date. Nothing gets signed on the first call.

Here is a simple path, in order.

1. Count your people

Write down every employee, their usual weekly hours and the state they work in. Hours tell you who is full-time. States tell you which extra rules apply. See the state pages.

2. Set a budget

Pick a monthly amount you could put toward benefits for each person. It does not need to be exact. A range is enough for a first call.

3. Ask your team

A short survey works. Ask what they would value most: health coverage, dental, time off, retirement savings. Ask who already has coverage through a spouse.

4. Compare options with an advisor

Look at a group plan and an HRA side by side, plus anything your state requires. See what a small business can offer.

5. Pick a start date and tell your team

Give people time to ask questions before the start date. If you choose a group plan, its waiting period for new hires cannot be longer than 90 days.

Questions owners ask

When can I start a small business health plan?

Through SHOP, the federal small business program, you can apply, pick a plan and enroll employees any time of year. Other plans have their own timelines, so ask your advisor.

Do I need to know which plan I want before the call?

No. Bring your headcount, your states and a rough budget. Choosing comes after you have seen the options.

Can I enroll my team on this site?

No. Nothing is bought or signed here. Your advisor and the plan's provider handle the paperwork.
